sustainable design, policies and regulations

this module introduces students to environmental issues and provides some in-depth understanding of the complexities and influences that built environment causes to the natural environment. We are assigned with 2 projects which includes a group project and an individual project.

project 1 : built environment and environmental impact

This project aims to create an awareness of environmental concerns and to help us realize and understand its impact and consequences of the built environment to the environment. We are required to choose a main environmental theme to review articles and present the critical points from the articles using an interactive poster in a group of 5.

requirements: 1 x A2 size living poster

theme : climate change & ozone loss

project 2 : exploring local built environment to sdgs

requirements: 1 x A3 board

This project allows us to explore how architecture can provide the basis for meeting several Sustainable Design Goals and create awareness of the 17 SDG goals and specifically the goals that are associated with the built environment. We are required to choose a building as a group and do the research and site visit together but choose different SDGs.

reflection

This project really helps me a lot in understanding the importance of sustainability in the built environment. I also realized and understand its impact and consequences of the built environment to the environment. I would like to thank my groupmates, Zixuan, Xinyee and Xiaoxi as we works very well together as a group since semester 1. I would also like to thank Dr Suja for her patience and love towards her students.

Throughout this project, the TGC that I've gained is DISCIPLINE SPECIFIC KNOWLEDGE as I were able to

describe the laws and policies related to the environment and interpret cases relating to sustainability. I am also able

to demonstrate an understanding of cultural, historical and established architectural theories, philosophies and context.

Moreover, the TGC that I've gained from this project is LIFELONG LEARNING as I can locate, extract, synthesize and utilize

information effectively. I can also manipulate the parameters of green building assessment tools and develop design to a

level for regulatory application for Building Plan submission that complies to the requirements of local authorities

Last but not least, the TGC that I've gained from this project is THINKING & PROBLEM-SOLVING SKILLS.

We were able to think critically and creatively while defining and analyzing problems to arrive at effective solutions

in this project. I am also able to apply the methods to achieve sustainability in building design and demonstrate

creativity, innovation and imagination and translate these into an architectural design solution
